How often should you detail your car?

Every few weeks? Twice a year? The honest answer depends on where your car sleeps, who rides in it and how often it sees the beach. Here is a simple rhythm for Queensland conditions, and a calculator to tune it to your car.

Sunshine Coast Detailing 22 October 2026 5 min read The short answer

For most Sunshine Coast cars: a safe wash every 2 to 4 weeks, a full inside and out detail every 3 to 6 months, and an interior deep clean every 6 to 12 months. Street parking, beach trips, kids, dogs and high kilometres push you to the shorter end.

Why Queensland cars need more than the brochure says

Most “how often” advice is written for places with mild sun and a proper winter. The Sunshine Coast is different. Cancer Council Queensland notes our UV index is routinely above 11 in summer, which is the “extreme” band, and that sun works on paint sealant, rubber, dash plastics and leather every day the car sits outside.

Add salt air, beach sand, bug season, bird and flying-fox droppings, and summer storms that leave muddy spray up the doors, and dirt simply does more damage here if it is left to sit. The goal is not a showroom car every day. It is never letting grime stay long enough to stain, etch or wear things out.

A simple rhythm that suits most cars

For an average Sunshine Coast car, parked in a carport and used for the school run and the weekly shop, this is the rhythm we suggest:

  • Safe wash every 2 to 4 weeks. Hand wash, wheels, glass and a quick vacuum. Sooner after the beach or a long highway run.
  • Full detail every 3 to 6 months. Inside and out, with fresh protection on the paint. That is what our Revitalise covers.
  • Interior deep clean every 6 to 12 months. Shampoo and extraction for seats, carpets and mats. More often with kids, dogs or sport gear on board.

Use the calculator below to tune that rhythm to your car. It takes about 20 seconds.

Coated paint still needs regular safe washing, it just stays cleaner for longer. Quantum Detail explains the routine in how to maintain a ceramic coating.

What pushes you to the shorter end

Four things change the answer more than anything else:

  • Where it parks. A garaged car can stretch every interval. Street parking, open driveways and anything under a tree mean sap, droppings and dew spots, so wash more often.
  • Who rides in it. Kids and dogs roughly halve the time between interior cleans. Food, sunscreen and fur work their way into fabric fast.
  • The beach. Salt and sand are the big ones on the Coast. A rinse after beach days, and a vacuum before sand works into the carpet, saves a lot of work later.
  • Kilometres. High highway kilometres bring bug strikes, road film and stone dust on the front of the car.

Ten minutes a week between details

You do not need to wash the car every weekend. A few small habits keep it close to clean so each detail goes further:

  1. Take rubbish, bottles and wrappers out every time you fill up.
  2. Shake out the floor mats once a week, before sand gets into the carpet underneath.
  3. Wipe bird droppings, sap and bugs off as soon as you see them, using a damp microfibre and plenty of water, not a dry tissue.
  4. Keep a sunshade in the windscreen when you park outside. It slows dash fading and keeps the cabin cooler.

Avoid the brush-type car wash if you can. The brushes carry grit from every car before yours and leave fine scratches that show up in the sun.

Signs it is time, whatever the calendar says

  • Water no longer beads or sheets off the paint after rain.
  • The paint feels rough when you run the back of your hand over it after a wash.
  • There is a smell when you first get in on a hot day.
  • Seats or carpet have marks that do not lift with a wipe or a vacuum.
  • Brake dust has baked onto the wheels and will not shift with a normal wash.

Any one of those means the next full detail or interior clean is due now, not in a month.

When a plan beats booking one-offs

If the calculator says you need a full detail every three months, a maintenance plan usually works out cheaper and you never have to remember to book. After an initial detail, existing clients can join The Full Works, a complete Revitalise every three months from $249, or the monthly Glow Up from $199. Both are available at your place or our studio, with no lock-in and 48 hours notice to pause.

Not a plan person? That is fine too. Book a Revitalise from $299 when the car needs it, add a Deep Interior from $349 once or twice a year, and keep the ten-minute habits going in between.

Questions

Quick answers.

How often should you detail your car in Queensland?

For most Sunshine Coast cars, a full inside and out detail every 3 to 6 months, a safe wash every 2 to 4 weeks, and an interior deep clean every 6 to 12 months. Street parking, beach trips, kids, dogs and high kilometres all push you towards the shorter end.

Is detailing every month too much?

Not if the car lives outside, goes to the beach often or carries kids and dogs. A monthly visit like our Glow Up plan is lighter than a full detail, so it keeps the car close to clean without paying for a full reset each time.

How often should I clean the inside of my car?

Vacuum and wipe the cabin every few weeks, and plan a deep clean with seat and carpet shampoo every 6 to 12 months. With kids or pets, every 3 to 6 months is more realistic.

Does a ceramic coated car still need detailing?

Yes. A coating makes washing easier and keeps dirt from sticking, but it still needs regular safe washing and the inside of the car still gets dirty. Coated cars can usually stretch the time between washes a little.

How much does a full car detail cost on the Sunshine Coast?

Our Revitalise full detail starts at $299 for a small car, $349 for a standard car or dual cab, $449 for a large or 7-seat car and $499 for a US truck. Saturday bookings add 15% and Sunday 25%.

Do you come to me?

Yes. We detail at your home or workplace across the Sunshine Coast. We need power and water within 30 metres of the car. There is no travel fee within 20 km of Corbould Park by road.
